Interview of Elizabeth Alloway by Rhonda Alloway. Elizabeth Alloway discusses life in Harlan city.
Interviewer's description-
"In this interview with Elizabeth Alloway, she has a vivid recollection of the extremely hard times that Harlan County miners endured. They made $3.60 per day working from daylight to dark. Miners lived as hard as they worked, spending money on Saturday nights in the honky-tonks and prostitute houses. A lot of miners were killed in gambling squabbles and drunken brawls. Sometimes enraged wives shot their husbands after catching them with bad women in rooms over the bars. Mrs. Alloway states that this life style was why Harlan County became notoriously known as Bloody Harlan." |
