Abstract Interview of Luther Scott by Sharon Burton.

Interviewer's description-
"Luther Scott was born at Cloverlick Creek in Cumberland, Kentucky, February 3, 1906 at his parents home. The oldest son of 11 children. His parents were Henry and Lucy Ann Blair Scott. His father farmed and worked in the mines. His mother farmed-she died when he was 6 years old. His father remarried Martha Turner. His only memories of his mother were of watching her sit holding a basket of yarn and watching the ball of yarn go around. His father's parents were Austin and Vienna Scott and his mother's parents were Thomas and Cecilia Huff Blair. He stated that the Scott's were originally from North Carolina. Mr. Scott worked on the farm until he was old enough to go into the timber woods; from there he worked in the coal mines until the doctor made him quit in 1969. He married Nora Ison in December, 1928. They had 7 children together and his wife had 2 children from a previous marriage. Mr. Scott recalls joining the union while living in Letcher County. He stated that while forming the union he spent most of his time in the hospital from crushing his foot in the coal mines. He recalls that during the forming of the union, the Sheriff, Theodore Middleton was having people killed. The organizer for this territory was offered 2 million dollars to leave, but he refused so they shot up his house and killed one of his sons. After the funeral, he got a caravan together and drove through Harlan daring policeman to come out-none of them were seen."
