Interviewer's description-
"In this oral history interview, Mr. Joseph Phipps, president of District 19, U.M.W.A., he talks about the formation and the early days of the union in Harlan County and the surrounding area. Mr. Phipps explains the reason for the present state of the union and the solutions to the current problems. He also tells about the local and national friction between the U.M.W.A. and the Progressive miners. The future of the union is also discussed."
