Abstract Interview of Charles Stevens by Opal Blevins.

Interviewer's description-
"Mr. Stevens was born and raised at Madisonville, in Western, Kentucky. He came to Coxton, Kentucky (Harlan County) on October 5, 1927. He was only 18 years old. He got his job through a friend he met at Bowling Green Business University and started work as a stenographer for $110.00 a month. Shortly after he became a scripter, payroll clerk, supply clerk and finally accountant. He was transferred to Wicksberry in Floyd County in 1935 where he remained for 12 years. In 1929 he married Eva C. Shelton. They had three children. He talks some about his children and grandchild. He talks about life during the depression at Coxton. He describes housing conditions, schools, church and several people who lived in the camp. He talks about the Burtons, Campbells and others. He talks some about passenger trains, where he worked as a ticket agent and how he sold tickets on a commission basis. Mentions the fact the first coal shipped from Harlan County was in 1917. Mr. Stevens also talks about wages and the price of coal. Wages were $2.00-$2.25 per day and coal sold for .28 a ton. He also talks about the different types of businesses in Coxton, including a doctor's office, commissary, club house, church and also about the different camps, Alabama Row, New Camp, etc. He talks some about the need for flood control in Coxton and closes this interview with comments about the lay-off situation today and safety conditions as compared with those when he worked for Cooper's Mining Company."
