Abstract Interview of Rhonda Verbal by Judy Howard.

Interviewer's description-
"Mrs. Verbal recounts how her German ancestors founded Dow's Chappel in Knox County, Kentucky. Where they built a sawmill, store, school, church and a public cemetery. She reminisces about her childhood, her family and activities of that era. She also talks of her educational preparation particularly the curriculum. She explains that she graduated from Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College and Union College and became a classroom teacher and later a principal. She served at several schools, including ones at Molus (where she was principal), Cranks Creek and Wallins (where she spent 31 years until she retired in 1976). She discusses, at length, her account of the history of Wallins Creek, Kentucky. Mentioned here is the "dinky" engine that ran six times per day between Creech Coal Camp and Wallins. Also she recounts who most of the major property owners were, 1) Jess Blanton owned Terry's Fork, 2) Grover Blanton, who owned the Pine Mountain side at Wallins all the way to Tremont, 3) Uncle Park Howard who owned the Fordson Coal Company, (she remembered him riding the dinky wearing his white suit with tobacco juice all over the front where he had attempted to spit out the window). This interview was filled with anecdotes including the disastrous fire which destroyed the business district of Wallins and the major coal companies which eventually led to its decline."
