Abstract	Interview of Lawrence Banks by Dorthea Nolan. Banks discusses his childhood, the Army, and mining. Interviewer's description- Lawrence Banks was born at Post Office, Kentucky in Letcher County, in 1917. Mr. Banks attended school through the 8th grade. At the age of 16 he got his first job in the coal mines. His father was a mine foreman. Mr. Banks talks about scrip and said the mines paid every two weeks. Mr. Banks was drafted into the Army, February 13, 1942, he was assigned to the Texas Coast Artillery. After the Army, Mr. Banks came back to Kentucky and worked in the mines for a while and then went to Ohio to work for an aircraft company that built B29's. He stated that he worked underground in the coal mines for 46 years. He retired as a mine inspector. He also recalls some of the violations he handed out while being an inspector and states that working in or around the mines was the only job he was ever satisfied with. Mr. Banks also recalls the Big Band Era and said that he felt people dressed better back then and wished those day were back again.
