Abstract Interview of Rufus and Katrine Bailey by Barbara Alred. The Baileys discuss their backgrounds and coal mining.

Interviewer's description-
"In this interview with Rufus and Katrine Baily, Mr. Bailey talks about his life in Harlan County. He states that he was born at Beechfork, Kentucky and moved to Benham, Kentucky in 1912. He recalls living at both Beechfork and Benham Kentucky as a child and that his father worked at the rock quarry and in the coal mines. He recalls attending school at Benham, Green Hill, Evarts and graduating from Harlan High School. He also worked his way through 4 years at Union College. He states that his father wanted him to become a school teacher but he wanted to become a doctor. He recalls his father getting his back broke and he had to miss a year of college. He later became a school teacher but states that he didn't like it so he quit and started working in the coal mines. He retired from the coal mines at the age of 65. Mr. Baily has also wrote his autobiography entitled Diamonds in my own Backyard."
